There is a wonderful show tonight at the Zinc Bar: the Manuel Valera New Cuban Express with Manuel Valera on piano, Yosvany Terry on saxophone, Tom Guarna on guitar, John Benitez on bass, Mauricio Herrera on percussion and Eric Doob on drums. Unfortunately I am a little sick and was advised to stay home. What a shame, really....I saw Manuel Valera this summer in Montreal, during the jazz festival. He played with John Benitez's band at the club Upstairs, where pianist Dan Tepfer also did a series of really beautiful sets with Gary Peacock. Yosvany Terry also performed in Benitez's band during the festival and I was fortunate enough to be at one of their sets with Canadian journalist Alain Brunet, who has very good and eclectic musical tastes. I attended their show after an interesting Sade concert and was musically relieved by their brio. Sade is, of course, a very unique entertainer. But Manuel Valera soothed my ears. I can't wait to attend one of his shows again.
